Crowned Buddha Aksobhya
Central Tibet, Densatil
15th Century
6 in. (15.2 cm)
Aksobhya, or the lord of the Vajra clan, represents the transmutation of delusion into wisdom (Rhie, Thurman, 1991). Aksobhya is considered one of the five Dhyani Buddhas, or Cosmic Buddhas and is usually represented in the Eastern direction of many mandalas.
The Buddha Aksobhya is seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, with his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, calling the Earth to witness his enlightenment, and his left hand in dhyana mudra. Buddha wears an ornate five-leaf crown surmounted by a vajra, a necklace inlaid with turquoise, armlets and anklets.
